UMINA’S DREW COURTNEY
WINS SECOND
JIM BEAM BOARDRIDERS CUP NATIONAL FINAL
Umina Club Champion Drew Courtney has taken
out the prestigious Jim Beam Boardriders Cup National Title
for the second time in three years after defeating local hero
Nathan Webster at North Narrabeen Beach today.
Courtney won the 2006 Jim Beam Boardriders Cup National Title
and showed it was no fluke with a string of strong performances
to claim victory in classic 4ft waves at North Narrabeen.
Former WCT surfer Webster took advantage of his local knowledge
to set up a good lead in the man-on-man final before Courtney
stormed home to take the title with a late wave, which the
judges gave an 8.0.
The vital late wave gave Courtney a 15.1 to 12.3 victory
and saw him collect $5,000 in cash and prizes.
Earlier in the day Courtney disposed of Wollongong Champion
Nick Squires 14 to 11.7 in the semi finals while Webster accounted
for 2007 runner up Marcus Aboody from Lennox Ballina 11.8
to 10.3 in the other semi final to set up the final showdown.
While Courtney’s Umina club has not progressed to the Jim
Beam Surftag National Series, Webster’s performance is a shot
in the arm for the North Narrabeen club, which goes into tomorrow’s
event as one of the favourites.
North Narrabeen took out the 2007 Jim Beam Surftag Series
National Final and has the added advantage of surfing the
2008 Series on home turf.
The 2008 Jim Beam Surftag Series National Final starts at
8.00am tomorrow (Friday) with some of Australia’s best surfers,
including World No.2 Taj Burrow and World No.4 Joel Parkinson
competing for the clubs.
There will be a LIVE
webcast of the Jim Beam Surftag National Final on Friday,
starting at 8.00am AEST at www.globalsurftag.com
The 2008 Jim Beam Surftag National Series is proudly supported
by Jim Beam, Oneill, Oporto, Vmoto, Mizone, Tracks and Coastalwatch.
