JIM BEAM SURFTAG BIG GUNS PROGRESS TO
QUARTER FINALS IN BIG SURF AT CRONULLA BEACH

Local knowledge helped Cronulla take a psychological edge over their more fancied rivals after the heats of the Jim Beam Surftag NSW Qualifiers in tricky conditions that produced solid 2m waves at Cronulla Beach today.

Cronulla recorded a day high 95.1 to progress to the quarter finals ahead of pre contest favourites North Steyne as most of the big guns made their way through to the quarter finals.

Cronulla young gun Kirk Flintoff led the locals to victory over North Steyne, which featured World No.12 Kai Otton and World No.32 Dayyan Neve, but the defending champions have fired a salvo ahead of the business end of the contest tomorrow.

“I think we can surf a lot better,” Otton said. “I was nervous out there today because it was my first heat of the year and there is more pressure when you are also surfing with your mates. You don’t want to let them down.

“A few of us weren’t as solid as we usually are but we’ll be better tomorrow and really the only goal for today was to make it through to the quarter finals and we’ve achieved that.”

Northern Beaches clubs dominated proceedings with North Narrabeen A, North Narrabeen B, Long Reef A, Long Reef B, Queenscliff, Dee Why and North Steyne making the quarter finals while highly fancied Avalon and Curl Curl will surf in the last remaining heat at 8am tomorrow.
