11.02.2009

Playing upon the passion and tribal nature of surfing, the Victoria Jim Beam Surftag sees Boardriders clubs from around the state and from South Australia looking to be the best this weekend at Gunnamatta Beach on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

Phillip Island are the defending VIC Jim Beam Surftag Champions and with amazing depth will again be the team to beat this weekend.

Torquay will be the hardest team for Phillip Island to beat as both teams continue their fierce rivalry built up over the past 10 years. Torquay will also be looking for their 4th VIC Surftag Title in seven years and will be lead by World Tour Surfer Nic Muscroft.

Seaford Boardriders from SA will for the second year travel to Gunnamatta to compete in the Series.

They were last years huge surprise package by finishing second at this same event which saw them qualify for the national final and went on to place a very strong fifth in that National Final.

Torquay, 13th and Peninsula Boardriders have all entered two teams as they attempt to finish in the top 2 and Qualify to the Jim Beam Surftag National Final being held at North Narrabeen, Sydney on March 13/14.

"This event always produces a tight finish and with 13th, Torquay and Peninsula all entering two teams club rivalry will be at an all time high." said Jim Beam Surftag Event Director Steve Harrison. "With $1500 being awarded to first place and the top 2 teams qualifying to the National Final the level of surfing is sure to be explosive."

Only two spots remain in the National Final heat draw and these two positions will go to 1st and 2nd placed teams this Saturday.

The Queensland, NSW and WA Qualifing Boardrider Clubs are Kirra, Snapper A, Snapper B, LeBa (Lennox/Ballina), Bronte, Werri, North Narrabeen, Ulladulla, Cronulla, Dee Why, Queenscliff, Curl Curl, Yallingup and Margaret River.

Gunnamatta this Saturday will be jam packed with surfing stars from across the state and this year’s event will be seriously fought out with all clubs aiming to take the bragging rights to being the states number one club and all desperately chasing at least a top two finish to gain qualification to the Jim Beam Surftag National Final.

With beautiful conditions predicted this years state Jim Beam Surftag looks set to be a great day of surfing and club rivalry!

Complimentary quality digital images will be forwarded to press Saturday afternoon along with copy from the event.

The Jim Beam Surftag National Series is proudly supported by Jim Beam, FCS, O’Neill, Vmoto, Coastalwatch, Rockstar Energy Drink and Tracks.
