Sydney,
January 30th 2007 - Wollongong's Scarborough Boardriders
will be looking to improve on their second placing in last
years NSW Jim Beam Surftag when the event gets underway this
weekend at Woonona Beach.
Being held for the first time in Wollongong the event has
attracted a maximum field of thirty two teams with Boardriding
Clubs from Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney, Wollongong and
the South Coast all competing for a top eight finish which
guarantees them a spot in the 2007 Jim Beam Surftag National
Final which is being held in Sydney on 2nd & 3rd March.
Defending NSW Surftag champions the Curl Curl Boardriders
will be out to win their third NSW Surftag title with team
captain Matt Bemrose looking to continue the form that captured
him the 2006 NSW Championship Circuit.
Wollongong clubs competing in the event include Sandon Point,
Woonona, Wollongong, Scarborough and for the first time East
Corrimal Boardriders as well as south coast club's Werri Beach
and the Ulludulla Boardriders.
Scarborough's team captain Christian Decluett said "the Scarborough
team is pumped for the event and is really looking forward
to competing in their home town against the other club's".
After finishing second in last years NSW event the Scarborough
team went on to finish ninth in last years National Final
that was won by Queensland's Snapper Rocks Surfriders.
Also up for grabs this weekend is $3000 that includes a $1200
winners cheque, the overall series prize pool is $100,000
in cash and prizes which includes $8,000 for the National
Champions as well as a surf trip to the Mentawai's for the
five surfers in the winning team.
The Jim Beam Surftag National Series is run under the popular
tag team format with each club being represented by five surfers.
In relay style each surfer catches three waves and then returns
to the beach to tag the next surfer. All three waves ridden
count towards the team's final score with each surfer's second
wave worth double points "Powerwave". Bonus points are also
on offer for each team's fifth surfer returning to the tag
area before the one hour time limit.
The 2007 Jim Beam Surftag National Series is proudly supported
by Jim Beam, Face of Australia Sunscreen, Mentawai Resorts,
vmoto, Oporto, Coastalwatch and Australia's Surfing Life.
