A lack of waves throughout Sydney, and the entire NSW coastline,
has seen the postponement of the O’Neill Gromtag event due
to take place this weekend.
With 25 teams jam packed with professional surfing stars of the
future from all corners of the state raring to go, the decision
was made to postpone the event in hope of more suitable conditions.
With the ocean not co-operating, Steve Harrison, Global Surftag
Managing Director, had no choice, but to reschedule the O’Neill
Gromtag.
“There was just no waves,” Harrison said.
Featuring a cast of top-rated ASP Australasian Pro Junior competitors
including Davey Cathels (North Narrabeen, NSW), Chris Salisbury
(Avalon), Nick Riley (Queenscliff), Tom Salveson (Werri Beach) and
current Australian champion Dane Atcheson (Avoca), the scene at
Newport resembled conditions more suitable for a swimming race.
“I couldn’t throw these guys out there knowing how
much is on the line for their respective boardrider clubs and community
pride,” Harrison added.
Playing upon the passion and tribal nature of surfing, the O’Neill
Gromtag sees Boardrider clubs from around the state looking to be
the best, something not available at the run of the mill surfing
contest.
“At this stage we’ll have to see what date best for
all involved and then make a calculated judgement on when to hold
the event,” Harrison continued.
Unlike conventional surfing contests which play upon individual
results, the O’Neill Gromtag is a teams based event drawing
upon the performances of five surfers per team, four under 20 competitors
and one under 16.
Add bonus points and a prize purse of $3000 and you have a perfect
recipe for some innovative and passionate surfing.
