The O'Neill Gromtag is the junior version of the
Surftag National Series offering junior surfers the chance to compete
under the exciting tag team format. Each Boardriding Club is represented
by five surfers made up by 4 under 20's and one under 16.
The 2008 O'Neill Gromtag will carry a $3,000 prize pool with the
overall winners receiving $1,200 as well as a vmoto scooter valued
at $3,000. Twenty five teams are expected to contest the event with
top Australian juniors Davey Cathels and David Vlug (North Narrabeen),
Nick Riley (Queenscliff), Tom Salverson (Werri Beach) and Chris
Salisbury (Avalon) set to represent their local Boardriding Clubs.
The Gromtag was first held in 2004 with Maroubra claiming victory
ahead of runners up Queenscliff who finished on top in 2005. The
event was not held in 2006 and made a welcome return in 2007 as
the O'Neill Gromtag which was narrowly won by
North Narrabeen
ahead of Curl Curl, Avalon and Dee Why.
In relay style each surfer catches three waves and then returns
to the beach to tag their team's next surfer. Heat duration is one
hour with four teams contesting each heat, bonus points are on offer
for each team's fifth surfer returning to the tag area on the beach.
The top two teams from each heat progress to the next round.
