TURF WAR AT GAS BAY

12.02.2014

Clubs clash for the WA Jim Beam Surftag Title

It’s already been a massive summer of Jim Beam Surftag and it’s set to explode this weekend with the 2014 Jim Beam Surftag Western Australia Qualifier beginning Saturday, February 15.

Margaret River have held a commanding record at the regional event with six WA titles but Yallingup, with their four titles, will be hoping to capitalise on an understrength Margies side with a number of key surfers unable to compete. Dave Macaulay, Jerome Forrest, Dave Delroy-Carr and Matt Baldock were all a part of last year’s winning side but will leave big gaps in both Margies teams this weekend. Margaret River captain Andrew Sheridan insists the depth of the club will be on full-display at Gas Bay as the turf war returns for the prestige of a Jim Beam regional title.

“With four of the five guys who won last year unable to compete it’s going to be a new-look team,” says Sheridan. “I think the good thing about our club, more so than others, is that we’ve got a lot of guys to choose from.”

“It’s cool, there’s never really been much difference between our A and B team… so we’ve got guys who just missed out last year getting an opportunity to surf. There’s a few young guys who’ve just turned 18 as well so it’ll be good to give them a chance to surf and we can see how they perform under the pressure of this format.”

Margaret River surfers will include Andrew Sheridan, Jethro Headstrom, Brett Hardy, Tom Innes and Shaun Green. The Yallingup team consists of Paul Patterson, Zak Ogram, Sam Tucker, Ryan Wordsworth and Jay Davies.

“It’s great that it’s at Gas Bay because it’s our local break and we’ve got a few guys who surf there quite a bit which will be to our advantage for sure,” says Sherdian. “There’s an imaginary border between us and Yalls so it’ll be good to see them crossing over.”

“We’ve had a good rivalry since the inception of the contest. The title count is pretty even at the moment so this week’s sure to be a good one. We’re all mates at the end of the day so while it’s competitive and we both want to win it’s all about the fun of the event.”

Seven teams will contest the regional qualifier. Margaret River will field two teams despite the absentees and Yallingup, Geraldton Trigg Point, City Beach and Contacio have also registered to compete. Trigg Point made history in 2012, becoming the first Perth-based club to take out the longest-running tag team series in the country and will by pushing hard for the $1500 winner’s cheque at this year’s event. The top two teams will qualify for the Australian Championships to be held at Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast, March 27-29. The country’s top 32 clubs will contest the National Title with the winning club taking home $15,000 plus five spots on a 7-day boat trip through the Maldives.
