Jim Beam Surftag - Margaret River cause Double Trouble in the West.

17.02.2014

Margaret River Boardriders proved why they are the best club in the region on Saturday after dominating the Western Australia Jim Beam Surftag with both their A & B teams claiming first and second position respectively. It’s the second year in a row the club have out-performed at their local Gas Bay break to progress through to the Australian Championships.

Despite having a number of top surfers unable to compete, the club showed their depth of talent in the blustery conditions and won (Margaret River “A” – 74.83, Margaret River “B” – 68.3) over Geraldton (57.93) and Yallingup (43.87) to clinch their seventh WA Title.

The morning of competition set the ideal stage for Jim Beam Surftag with light offshore winds grooming a steady three-foot swell. But by finals time, Mother Nature cranked the winds and competitors were forced to negotiate tricky conditions, but it didn’t stop Margaret River’s Dino Adrian from scoring a whopping 24.80 to become the Tee Ink Man of the Match for the best performer in the final.

“Everyone at the club is stoked. Shero [Andrew Sheridan] decided to put two teams in and to get first and second is epic,” Adrian said. “We had a bunch of guys who were away but it gave others a chance and it all came together.”

“The surf got pretty messy towards the end there and the local reefs can be tricky so I think having it at home at Gas Bay definitely worked to our advantage. There was a fair bit of chop going around but it was definitely contestable and we had all the local Margie’s boys down their watching and supporting the two teams.”

“It’s awesome knowing that we’ve got two solid teams with not much between them heading to D-Bah for the finals. I can’t wait.”

Along with Dino Adrian, Tom Innes, Jethro Hedstrom, Shaun Green and Andrew Sheridan won the $1500 cheque for the club and vital bragging rights over their Yallingup rivals.

While both Margaret River teams ran away with the qualifying positions in the end, it was Yallingup who began to falter early, with cracks in their team showing from the outset. Yallingup were hungry to rectify themselves atop the battle with Margaret River but faded early after their two first surfers only managed a 13 point total. Geraldton battled hard to the end but Margaret River’s club captain, Andrew Sheridan riled his opposing surfers with a mix of experience and powerful surfing. He was the only fifth surfer able to complete his three waves within the 60-minute time frame proving time management is often the deciding factor in Jim Beam Surftag.

“It wasn’t one of those finals where we ran away with it from the first hooter. A few of the boys had shockers on their Powerwave and it could’ve been anyone’s,” said Adrian.

“But it really came down to the last guys and getting those bonus points and luckily Shero got us through the gate in time. So many times it’s come down to those bonus points you get for finishing on time so we just concentrated on getting them.”

“For sure, it was sick to get a win over Yallingup. A few of the boys have a solid rivalry with them but at the end of the day it’s good to see them all and catch up. That’s one of the coolest things about this event.”

The highly sought after BOSCH Rock Box – awarded to the surfer with the highest score on their second wave known as the BOSCH Powerwave – was won by City Beach’s Matt Delroy-Carr after scoring a 7.27 during the morning’s clean conditions. Delroy-Carr’s team finished 6th overall while Trigg Point took out 5th position.

Both Margaret River teams have now qualified for the Australian Championships to be held at Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast, March 27-29. The country’s top 32 clubs will contest the National Title with the winning club taking home $15,000 plus five spots on a 7-day boat trip through the Maldives courtesy of Perfect Wave Travel.
