COVERED Magazine Gromtag, South Curl Curl, Sydney

Aussie Champ Kai Warner returns for North Narrabeen.

A record field of Twenty Two teams will compete in Saturday's COVERED Magazine Gromtag at Sydney's South Curl Curl Beach with host club C.U.B.A. (Curly United Boardriders Association) striving for back-to-back Gromtag Titles.

Merewether, North Shelly and Wamberal will head south to take on the Sydney based clubs with Scarborough, Sandon Point, Southbridge Shellharbour and Werri Beach all heading north for the under 18 tag team event.

Maroubra won the first Gromtag Title in 2004 with North Narrabeen (NN) winning back-to-back Titles in 2007 and 2008 with Elouera going back to back in 2012 and 2013. This weekend North Narrabeen will be led by freshly crowned Australian under 18 Champion Kai Warner who was a standout at last years Gromtag guiding NN to a 4th place finish.

On top of winning the Australian Title Warner returned home last weekend to take out the Open Final of North Narrabeen's monthly club contest finishing ahead of World Qualifying Series competitors Cooper Chapman and Jordy Lawler, "I am still in shock that I won the Aussie Title and even more stoked I came home and beat Cooper in Boardriders," Warner said. "We have a pretty good team this year so hopefully we do better than last year."

C.U.B.A. will be hard to beat on home turf with team captain Harley Ross-Webster returning from the Australian Titles with a 3rd place finish. "I'm really excited to represent Curl Curl at the tag this weekend." Ross-Webster said. "It's been my Boardriders Club since I was a little kid and it would be awesome to get back-to-back wins for the Club."

Ross-Webster is expecting some tough competition especially from northern beaches rivals North Narrabeen, "We will have a bit of competition from North Narra especially on the back of Kai Warner's win at the Australian Titles recently, but I would love to go up against him and get one back. He's a great surfer so it's always exciting to have strong competition; it brings out the best surfing."

Last years runners up Elouera Boardriders will be looking to secure their third Gromtag Title in four years with the inform Jared Hickel confirmed in Elouera's starting lineup. Hickel missed last year's event due to an extended stint in Hawaii and without the powerful goofy footer Elouera narrowly missed out on three straight wins going down to Curl Curl by less than 4 points.

North Steyne's Jamie Krups and Queenscliff's Pat Parker will be competing in their last junior event at the Gromtag with both eager to finish ahead of their neighboring club. Queenscliff's team will include NSW under 12 and 14 Champions Winter Vincent and George Pittar as well as Northern Beaches under 18 Girls Champion Alysse Cooper. North Steyne finished one place ahead of Queenscliff last year in sixth position.

2015 COVERED Magazine Gromtag has a $2000 prize pool with the champion team receiving $1000. Each team includes three x under 18's and two x under 14's with each surfer in relay style catching two waves followed by a sprint up the beach to tag their teams next surfer. Competition will commence at 7.30am on Saturday with the final scheduled for 3.00pm.

The 2015 COVERED Magazine Gromtag is proudly supported by Swellnet.
