Squiers Wins the Deck Bar Pro and Takes the Lead in the Ratings

Squiers Wins the Deck Bar Pro and Takes the Lead in the Ratings.

Wollongong powerhouse Nic Squiers has won the Deck Bar Pro at Dee Why Beach defeating Elouera's Jared Hickel in the final. The fourth event of the Bacardi Surf Tour was surprisingly held in punchy three-foot waves with conditions much bigger than predicted.

Squiers started the final strong with a 7.17 that he later backed up with a 5.60 to score a total of 12.77. His younger opponent Hickel waited patiently for a set wave but was only able to score a 5.93 and a 2.87 totally 8.80. Squiers had earlier in the day held off strong performances from Werri Beaches Dean Bowen in the Semi Final and Avoca's Dane Atcheson in the Quarter Final who he narrowly beat by 0.13.

The win at Dee Why has elevated Squiers to the top of the Bacardi Surf Tour Ratings and with the final event of the Tour being held at Mona Vale later in the month Squiers had put himself in the perfect position to win the Title and the $2500 winners cheque.

"I am really happy with the event win at Dee Why on the weekend," Squiers said. "I was having a look at the leader board the other day and as I have missed one event already I knew to have any chance to be in the running at the end I needed a good result. Fingers crossed for some good conditions at Mona Vale, it should be a great day of surfing."

With each surfer's best four results counting from five events, Squiers has earlier in the year finished third in both the Triple Bull Cronulla Pro and the Stowaway Pro at Freshwater. He missed the Aloha Manly Style Pro in June due to atrocious weather conditions. Heading to Sydney on the Princess Motorway Squiers was forced to turn his van around and head home after gail force winds and torrential rain had pushed his van sideways whilst driving.

Recently returning home from Europe competing on the WSL Qualifying Series Elouera's Jared Hickel took down the two finalists from last months Stowaway Pro Dayyan Neve and Perth Standlick on his way to the final. "Stoked to finish second in the Deck Bar Pro yesterday and to surf against Nic in the final," Hickel said. "I'm heading off to Brazil in the next few weeks to compete in the QS6000 so it was good to use this event as a warm up which showcased some amazing surfers from NSW."

Central Coasts Shane Holmes and Maroubra's Blake Thornton surfed the heat of the day in Round 2 with Holmes opening wave scoring a 9.93. Thornton answered back with a 9.0 and a 7.83 but it wasn't enough to finish ahead of Holmes who posted a heat total of 17.60. Holmes took home a $900 G-Shock for the highest wave of the day.
