North Avalon Win Thriller at Sailor Jerry Surftag Qualifier

Merewether's Women's Team Create History Winning On Debut

North Avalon Surfriders Association (NASA) have won the second Sailor Jerry Surftag Qualifier at Newcastle's Merewether Beach narrowly finishing ahead of North Steyne Boardriders by 0.90. North Avalon finished with 79.77 points with North Steyne coming home strong to finish on 78.87.

With the lead changing multiple times during the sixty minute final North Avalon held off strong performances from not only North Steyne but host club Merewether (67.41) who finished third and defending Surftag Australian Champions North Narrabeen (67.25).

Shane Carroll (20.87) started strong for NASA and after Letty Mortensen (22.57) and Fraser Dovell (23.03) had locked in big scores that included a 9.0-point Powerwave from Dovell, NASA had hit the lead but were running out of time to catch their allocated waves of two per surfer. Chris Salisbury (12.43) caught his two waves in short time allowing Dane Beevor (1.07) to enter the lineup but Beevor was unable to find his second wave opening the door for North Steyne to steal victory in the final minute.

With ten seconds on the clock North Steyne's fifth surfer Heath Irving was able to find a wave and perform a series of backhand slashes, needing a 3.88 the score from the judges came in at a 3.43 (Powerwave is worth double points) resulting in North Avalon winning their first Surftag event.

NASA's team Captain Shane Carroll has been competing in Surftag since 2001 and the 32 year old couldn't be happier. "We are so stoked to finally get a win for the club," Carroll said. "This really means a lot to us, we have come close a few times over the years in different team events but to win with the two younger guys Letty and Fraser as well as Critter and Dane is something really special. It was a super hard final so to come away with the win was a big effort from the boys."

With the top 8 Men's teams qualifying to the Sailor Jerry Surftag Australian Championships, North Avalon, North Steyne, Merewether and North Narrabeen will be joined by North Shelly, Avoca, Wamberal and Queenscliff on Sydney's Northern Beaches in May.

In the Women's Division Merewether created history defeating North Narrabeen in the Final, 47.83 to 34.51. It was the first time Merewether had entered a Women's team in the Sailor Jerry Surftag and the team of Philippa Anderson, Sarah Phelan, Ruby Bortolus, Abbey Paxton and Laura Phelan had earlier in the day won their Semi Final by 30 points. Anderson was the standout on the day posting a 9.17 Powerwave in the Semi Final that she backed up with a two-wave total of 15.67 in the Final.

"The Merewether gals are super happy on the win," Anderson said. "We all love to surf and coming together to take the win was amazing on our home turf. All the Women's teams that competed over the weekend put up a good fight and the standard of surfing was really high so we're stoked to take the win. I'm super thrilled to take the best score of the day with a 9.17 and hopefully I can do the same in the National Final in May."

Joining Merewether and North Narrabeen at the Australian Championships will be North Shelly who finished in third position ahead of Queenscliff.

Merewether's Jacko Baker won the Sailor Jerry Powerwave Award for 9.77 in the Semi Finals.
