Cabarita On Home Turf At Sailor Jerry Surftag

9th April 2018

Cabarita Boardriders are looking forward to the rare opportunity of competing on their home beach this weekend in the Sailor Jerry Surftag Australian Series. For the first time in 17 years Cabarita Beach will host the QLD & Northern NSW Qualifier with Boardriding Clubs from Noosa to Lennox Heads looking to secure a top six finish and qualify to the Sailor Jerry Surftag Australian Championships.

Cabarita Boardriders Team Captain Brent Savage is excited to be competing in a team event on his home beach, "It's great the Surftag is being held at Cabarita, especially during such a good time of the year for waves", Savage said. "We are going to run a selection trials this week to finalize our team as all our top guys want to represent the club. Local knowledge and wave selection play a big part in team events so we definitely want to take advantage of the event being held in our backyard".

With Chippa Wilson in doubt due to a back injury the Cabarita squad includes Savage, Josh Fuller, Jason Jameson, Dan Sinclair and Tim Chalmers.

Cabarita will need to overcome some tough competition to finish on top with QLD's best Boardriding Clubs heading south for the weekend. Snapper Rocks, Kirra, Currumbin Alley, Palm Beach, Burleigh Heads, North End and Noosa will be up against D'Bah, Kingscliff, Byron Bay and Lennox-Ballina.

Kingscliff Boardriders finished in 13th position at last years Australian Championships and Team Captain Mitch James likes their chances of a top six finish on the weekend, "Stoked to be competing in a tag team event just down the road", James said. "I think we have a really good chance of a big result now that the event is being held at Cabarita, we surf down their a fair bit so hopefully the waves are good on the weekend".

In the Women's Division 3 x Australian Champions D'Bah will take on North End, Currumbin Alley and Snapper Rocks with the top two teams qualifying to the Australian Championships. The D'Bah team of Freya Prumm, Audrey Styman-Lane, Grace Styman-Lane, Brodie Doyle and Amiya Doyle, have the opportunity to be the first team in Surftag history to secure four straight Australian Championships if they can defend their title.

The top 24 Men's teams and 10 Women's teams will contest the Sailor Jerry Surftag Australian Championships at Duranbah Beach, Tweed Heads on 27th & 28th April. Defending Men's Australian Champions North Shelly Boardriders (Central Coast) will go into the Australian Championships as No.1 seeds after taking out the Newcastle Qualifier in January.

Competition starts at 9am on Saturday at Cabarita Beach with the Men's Finals and the Women's Division being held on Sunday. For live scores during the event go to
