Young Gun Vaughan Receives North Shelly Call-Up For Sailor Jerry Surftag Showdown

23rd April 2018

Australia's best twenty-four Boardriding Clubs are heading to the Gold Coast this week to compete in the Sailor Jerry Surftag Australian Championships at Duranbah Beach. Defending Men's Champions North Shelly Boardriders have been forced to make a line up change with young gun Zac Vaughan coming into the team replacing Riley Laing.

Laing has been in Indonesia competing at the WSL QS1500 Krui Pro and won't make it back in time resulting in Vaughan receiving the call from Club President Cameron Sharpe. Twenty-one year old Vaughan will join Shane Holmes, Russ Molony, Saxon Lumsden and Johnnie Keith in the North Shelly team who will go into the event as No.1 seeds after winning the Sailor Jerry Surftag Newcastle Qualifier in January.

Vaughan surfed in the North Shelly "B" team at the Newcastle Qualifier and couldn't be happier with the call-up to the "A" team, "I'm really amped, this is a big thing for me to be surfing for the club at the Australian Championships", Vaughan said. "I watched the boys win last year down at North Narrabeen and realize what's on the line this weekend up on the Gold Coast. When Cam Sharpe gave me the call I was so happy and have been pumped ever since".

North Shelly will face Elouera and Cabarita in Heat 1 on Friday morning with the North Shelly Women's team surfing against Cronulla Girls and Currumbin Alley in Round 1 on Friday afternoon.

With Australian Titles on the line in both Men's and Women's Divisions, the D'Bah Boardriders are looking to create history by winning their fourth straight Australian Title in the Women's.

Freya Prumm, Audrey Styman-Lane, Grace Styman-Lane, Amiya Doyle and Brodie Doyle will start their Title defence on Friday afternoon in Semi Final No.1 against Sydney's Queenscliff Boardriders and Victoria's Mornington Peninsula Surfriders. The Queenscliff team will include Alysse Cooper who recently won the WSL QS1000 Krui Pro in Indonesia.

Men's teams competing include, Bronte, Elouera, Cronulla, Scarborough, Werri Beach, Queenscliff, North Avalon, Avoca, North Shelly, Merewether, Torquay, Mornington Peninsula, 13th Beach, Lennox-Ballina, Cabarita, Kingscliff, D'Bah, Snapper Rocks, Kirra, Burleigh Heads & North End.

In the Women's Division defending champions D'Bah Boardriders will be up against, Cronulla Girls, Cronulla Christian Surfers, Queenscliff, Mornington Peninsula, Merewether, North Shelly, Currumbin Alley & North End.
